Citybike Helsinki

Support

An unofficial iOS app for the Helsinki and Espoo city bikes, made by ALeOps. It is not made by, endorsed by or affiliated with HSL.

Contact: [email protected] — questions, bug reports and suggestions all go to the same place. If you are reporting a bug, the app version (Account → About) and your iOS version help a great deal.

What the app does

The map works without signing in. Everything about your own account needs an HSL account with a valid city bike season pass.

Frequently asked

Do I need to sign in?

Only for your own rides, cyclist ID and PIN. The station map works without an account.

Why does it ask me to sign in again?

It should not, most of the time — the app renews your HSL session silently in the background. HSL does end sessions eventually, and then the app asks once more.

Where do I type my password?

On HSL’s own sign-in page, shown inside the app. The app never sees it. See the privacy policy.

Can I see a ride while I am still riding it?

No. HSL only publishes a trip once the bike is returned, so a ride appears in the history a short while after you dock it.

Why does the app not show my PIN?

Because HSL does not send it. The account data the app receives contains the PIN only as four mask characters, never the digits, so no third-party app can display it — and neither can this one. Your cyclist ID is sent in full and is shown. If you have forgotten your PIN, you can change it in your HSL account: https://www.hsl.fi/en/my-information/citybikes

My cyclist ID does not work on the bike.

It comes straight from your HSL account, so the app shows exactly what HSL has. If it is refused at the keypad, the problem is with the account or the bike, and HSL customer service can help: https://www.hsl.fi/en/contact

The map is empty.

The city bike season runs from spring to 31 October. Outside it there are no bikes on the streets and the stations report nothing.

Which languages does it speak?

English, Finnish, Swedish and Russian. The app follows your iPhone’s language setting; there is no separate setting inside the app.

Does it cost anything? Are there ads?

No and no. The app is free, has no advertising, no analytics and no accounts of its own.

How do I delete my data?

Sign out inside the app, or delete the app. Both erase everything it kept. Nothing was ever stored anywhere else.

Where the data comes from

Station data comes from the public city bike feed, published as open data under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. Account data comes from your own HSL account, read on your behalf.

Problems with the bikes themselves

Broken bikes, billing disputes, season passes and account trouble are HSL’s, not this app’s: https://www.hsl.fi/en/contact
